Samsung’s Galaxy Z Rollable patent shows moving camera that slides with expandable screen

Samsung’s first rollable phone could be its most unusual device in years. A newly discovered patent shows the Galaxy Z Rollable will have a screen that expands sideways – but the real surprise is a rear camera module that slides out with the expanding body.

This design represents Samsung’s boldest attempt yet to differentiate from the crowded foldable market. While companies like Huawei and Oppo have shown rollable prototypes, Samsung’s approach of integrating moving hardware components could set it apart from competitors who focus purely on flexible displays.

The patent, revealed through a collaboration with leaker David from @xleaks7, shows a device that fundamentally rethinks how rollable phones should work. Instead of keeping all components stationary while only the screen moves, Samsung’s design makes the camera an active part of the transformation process.

In its compact form, the Galaxy Z Rollable looks like a standard smartphone with a tall display and centered selfie camera. When activated, the screen expands sideways to create a tablet-like experience. The magic happens on the back where the camera module lives on the moving section of the body.

As the display expands, the entire rear section slides out, carrying the camera module with it. When closed, the camera module fits neatly into a cutout in the frame. This creates a cleaner aesthetic when compact and a more futuristic appearance when expanded.

Samsung’s patent describes several technical components that make this possible:

  • Flexible display with sideways expansion
  • Movable housing sections
  • Sliding camera module integrated with expanding body
  • Sensors to track component positioning
  • Processor to manage the transformation sequence

The technical goal focuses on helping the device understand how its parts move during expansion and retraction. This is critical for camera alignment, augmented reality features, and overall positioning accuracy.

This patent arrives as the foldable phone market faces increasing competition and consumer fatigue with incremental improvements. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series have dominated the space, but sales growth has slowed as the novelty wears off and prices remain high.

Rollable phones represent the next evolution in flexible displays. Unlike foldables that create a crease, rollable screens can expand smoothly without visible fold lines. Samsung Display has already demonstrated concepts like the Slidable Flex Duet, which expands from 8.1 inches to 12.4 inches.

The big challenge will be durability. Moving screens are already complex engineering problems, and adding moving camera modules increases potential failure points. Samsung will need to prove this design can withstand thousands of expansion cycles while maintaining camera alignment and image quality.

Industry analysts expect rollable phones to remain niche products initially, similar to how foldables launched. The complexity of manufacturing moving components will likely keep prices high, limiting adoption to early adopters and tech enthusiasts.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed any release timeline for the Galaxy Z Rollable, though rumors suggest the company is actively developing rollable prototypes. The patent filing indicates serious engineering work is underway, but consumer products could still be years away.

If Samsung executes this vision successfully, the Galaxy Z Rollable could become more than just another foldable alternative. The moving camera module would create an instantly recognizable design that stands out in videos and demonstrations – exactly the kind of “wow factor” Samsung needs to reignite excitement in the flexible display category.
