Apple has completely rebuilt Siri from the ground up. The new Siri AI represents the company’s most significant update to its voice assistant since the original launch over a decade ago.
The announced upgrade brings natural conversation abilities, web search capabilities, and deep integration across Apple’s entire ecosystem. More importantly for privacy-conscious users, it does all this while keeping personal data secure through Apple’s new Private Cloud Compute system.
This launch positions Apple to compete directly with ChatGPT, Google Assistant, and other AI-powered chatbots that have gained popularity over the past few years. The timing is crucial as competitors like Google and Microsoft have been rapidly improving their own voice assistants with large language models.
Personal context understanding across your apps
The biggest change is Siri’s ability to understand and search through your personal data. You can now ask Siri to find a restaurant recommendation from a friend’s text message, pull up a hotel confirmation number from an old email, or locate photos from a recent trip with family.
This personal context works across multiple apps:
- Messages and email searches
- Photo searches by people, places, or events
- Third-party app integration through Spotlight
- Calendar and reminder connections
The assistant can also perform actions across apps. For example, you can ask Siri to draft an email from scratch or edit and share a set of photos without switching between applications.
Web search and real-time information
Siri AI now connects to the web to answer questions on virtually any topic. This addresses one of the biggest limitations of the previous version, which could only access pre-programmed responses and basic device functions.
You can ask about current events, upcoming concerts in your city, when the next solar eclipse will occur, or any other topic that requires up-to-date information. The assistant can also continue these conversations naturally, allowing follow-up questions without repeating context.
New ways to interact across devices
Apple has expanded how you can access Siri across different devices:
- iPhone users can swipe down from the Dynamic Island for in-depth conversations
- iPad and Mac integration through Spotlight search
- Context menu integration for asking about specific files or images
- Apple Vision Pro gets a 3D visualization you can place anywhere in your space
- Apple Watch includes Smart Stack suggestions to continue conversations
A dedicated Siri app now syncs conversation history across all your devices through iCloud, letting you start a chat on your Mac and continue it on your iPhone.
Visual intelligence and camera integration
The assistant now includes powerful image understanding capabilities. On iPhone, a new Siri mode in the Camera app lets you point at objects to get information or take actions.

Visual Intelligence also comes to iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro for the first time, allowing you to ask questions about anything on your screen.

Siri AI includes new writing capabilities that work across virtually any app where you type. You can describe what you need and Siri will generate a draft from scratch, or ask for specific edits to existing text.
The assistant can adapt to your communication style with different people. If you typically send bullet points to your manager, Siri will automatically format emails that way. It also provides automatic proofreading as you type across the system.
Privacy protections and on-device processing
Apple emphasizes that Siri AI maintains strong privacy protections despite these new capabilities. The system uses a combination of on-device processing and Apple’s new Private Cloud Compute architecture.
When requests need server processing, Apple says personal data is not stored or made accessible to the company or anyone else. Outside experts can verify these privacy claims at any time.
For supported devices, Siri AI includes Apple’s most advanced on-device model, which enables more expressive voices and improved dictation accuracy without sending data to servers.
Availability and device support
Siri AI is available for developer testing starting today across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27. A public beta will launch later this year for English-speaking users, with additional languages coming soon.
The features require relatively recent hardware:
- iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPad models with M1 or later, iPad mini with A17 Pro
- Mac with M1 or later, MacBook Neo with A18 Pro

European Union users will face some restrictions initially. While Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro users can access Siri AI, the features won’t be available on iPhone and iPad in the EU at launch as Apple works through regulatory requirements. Chinese users will also wait longer while Apple addresses local regulatory requirements.
