Nothing Phone 1 gets its last ever update as the company looks ahead

Nothing has officially ended software support for the Phone 1, its debut smartphone. The device is now receiving its final update, carrying the July 2026 Android security patch, four years after it first went on sale. As reported by Notebookcheck, Nothing confirmed the milestone on its community forums.

The Phone 1 launched in July 2022 running Android 12. It introduced the Glyph Interface and the transparent back design that became Nothing’s signature look across every phone that followed. Over its four-year lifespan, it received three Android version upgrades, with Android 15 being its last major OS update.

Nothing said the Phone 1 remains a highly usable device and will always hold a place in the company’s history, even without future security patches or Android updates. That is a standard farewell message, but the four-year support window is still a solid run for a mid-range phone, especially from a brand that was brand new at the time.

Four years of software support has become a rough industry baseline for Android phones in this segment, though Samsung and Google now promise up to seven years for their flagship and mid-range lines. Nothing’s commitment sits closer to what brands like OnePlus and Motorola typically offer, which is fine but increasingly looks modest as competitors raise the bar.

The final update includes only the July 2026 security patch along with general bug fixes and stability improvements. There are no new features. For anyone still using a Phone 1 daily, the device will keep working fine, it just will not receive any more protection against newly discovered security vulnerabilities going forward.

While the Phone 1’s run ends, Nothing is already moving on. The company is set to launch the Phone (4b) on July 7, its next budget-focused device. Nothing has confirmed it will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, widely expected to be the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4. Leaked details point to a solid spec sheet for the price:

  • 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate
  • 8GB of RAM with storage up to 256GB
  • 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation
  • 8MP secondary sensor and a 16MP front camera
  • 6,000mAh battery with 33W wired fast charging
  • Nothing OS 4.1 based on Android 16

The phone is also expected to keep Nothing’s transparent design on a plastic frame, available in Blue, Black, and White. Nothing has been pushing harder into the budget segment with its “b” series, and the Phone (4b) appears to continue that strategy with a competitive battery size and a large display at what is expected to be an accessible price.

The timing is worth noting. Nothing is closing out support for its oldest phone on the same week it prepares to launch a new one. That is smart product cycle management, keeping attention on what is coming rather than what is ending. For longtime Phone 1 owners, it is a clear signal to start thinking about an upgrade, and Nothing would very much like that upgrade to stay within its own lineup.
