Apple’s long-rumored camera-equipped AirPods Pro may have hit a wall. A leaker known as “Kosutami” posted on X claiming that development of the product has been “suspended,” walking back an earlier post that suggested the project had simply been “concluded.” No other details were offered.
The timing is awkward. Just weeks ago, Bloomberg reported that the camera AirPods Pro had reached an “advanced” testing stage, with early mass production potentially around the corner. That makes Kosutami’s claim all the more surprising, and harder to immediately dismiss or confirm.
So what would these cameras actually do? The short answer: they wouldn’t be for photos or video. Apple’s plan, according to multiple sources, is to use infrared cameras to feed visual data about the wearer’s surroundings directly to Siri. The idea is to tie the AirPods into Apple Intelligence, giving Siri a kind of ambient awareness of what you’re doing and where you are. Kosutami first described this use case back in February, and other credible sources have since backed it up.
The project has reportedly been in development for around four years. Apple originally wanted to start selling the camera AirPods Pro in the first half of 2026, but that timeline slipped because the smarter, AI-powered version of Siri wasn’t ready. That upgraded Siri is present in the current iOS 27 beta but won’t reach regular users until iOS 27 launches in September.
Bloomberg’s earlier report also flagged a separate potential reason for delays: a shortage of memory chips and other silicon affecting the wider industry. Apple’s operations teams were reportedly working to lock down components despite those supply constraints. It’s unclear whether that pressure played any role in what Kosutami is now calling a suspension.
This matters beyond just one product. Apple has been positioning Apple Intelligence as a core part of its hardware strategy going forward. Siri’s ability to understand visual context is a key part of that, and the camera AirPods Pro were shaping up to be one of the more visible examples of that vision in action. A suspension, if real, would be a setback for that roadmap.
As for Kosutami’s track record, it’s mixed. On the positive side:
- About 10 months before the iPhone 16 Pro launched, they correctly predicted it would have a metal-enclosed battery
- They also gave an early look at the FineWoven Apple Watch band before it was officially shown
On the other hand, Kosutami incorrectly called AirPods Pro 3 as “imminent” back in August 2024, and that product didn’t materialize on that timeline. So while they have legitimate insider access to Apple prototype hardware, their read on launch schedules and project status has been off before.
For now, it’s a waiting game. Apple has not commented, and Bloomberg has not updated its earlier reporting. Whether this is a full cancellation, a temporary pause, or a miscommunication remains unknown. Given how far along Bloomberg said the project was just weeks ago, a complete shelving seems unlikely, but a delay into 2027 is now very much on the table.
