Google’s Quick Share backup feature may skip Samsung phones entirely

Google has been quietly working on a way to back up your Android phone directly to a Windows PC, no cloud storage required. The feature is built into Quick Share, and it would automatically save selected photos and videos to your computer over Wi-Fi. It sounds like a genuinely useful addition to the Android ecosystem. There is just one catch: Samsung phones may not be invited to the party.

According to Android Authority, an info page activated inside Google Play Services v26.26.33 spells out exactly how the feature works, and includes a clear note that Samsung Galaxy devices are not supported. That is a significant exclusion. Samsung is the largest Android phone maker in the world, which means a large share of Android users could be locked out of a feature that is supposed to benefit the wider Android ecosystem.

The feature itself is straightforward. You start the process through the Quick Share app on your Windows PC, and both your phone and PC need to be signed into the same Google Account. After that, backups happen automatically each day when both devices are on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. You can also kick off a manual backup whenever you want. There is no cloud middleman, and no extra cost.

Nobody has confirmed why Samsung is excluded. The most likely explanation is Samsung’s own Smart Switch app, which already lets Galaxy users back up their data to Windows PCs, Macs, and even USB drives. Google may be avoiding stepping on Samsung’s toes, or the two companies may have agreed to keep their backup solutions separate. Either way, Smart Switch does have one gap worth noting: it does not currently support automatic backups. So Quick Share would actually be solving a problem Smart Switch has not yet addressed.

This is part of a broader push by Google to improve Android’s backup story. The company has also been testing per-app cloud backup controls this year, suggesting backups are a priority area. Android has long lagged behind iPhone when it comes to simple, reliable backup options, and these moves suggest Google is trying to close that gap.

Here is what the feature is expected to offer, based on the activated info page:

  • Automatic daily backups of selected photos and videos
  • Local backup only, no cloud storage involved
  • Works over Wi-Fi when phone and PC are nearby
  • Both devices must be signed into the same Google Account
  • Manual backups can be triggered at any time
  • Managed through the Quick Share app on Windows

It is worth being cautious about all of this. The details come from an APK teardown, which means the feature is still in development. Code found in a work-in-progress build does not always make it to a public release, and details can change. The Samsung exclusion in particular could be a placeholder or an early decision that gets reversed before launch.

The hope is that Google and Samsung find a way to bring Quick Share backups to Galaxy users before this rolls out broadly. The two companies already have a history of sharing technology under the Quick Share brand, so a solution is not out of the question. For now, though, the biggest Android phone brand looks like it will be sitting this one out.
