This has been coming for a while. Google has been quietly pulling Assistant out of its products one by one, from smart displays to Chromebooks to Android phones. Gemini has been creeping in to fill that space, and Google has been pretty upfront that Assistant’s days were numbered. But there’s something different about getting an official email with a date on it. That’s not a hint. That’s a funeral notice.
For most people, this probably won’t feel like a disaster. Gemini has gotten genuinely good over the past year. It handles complex questions better, it connects to Google’s apps more intelligently, and it feels like an actual AI assistant rather than a glorified voice search. If you’ve used Gemini on your phone already, you know it’s a real step up for anything beyond setting a timer or asking about the weather.
But some users are going to feel this. People who built routines around Assistant’s specific features, households where multiple family members rely on voice commands, anyone using older Android devices where Gemini’s performance might be shakier. Google has a habit of retiring things without fully replacing every use case, and that gap always catches someone off guard.
The bigger picture here is that Google is done hedging. Gemini is the bet, full stop.
