Vivo jumped from X300 straight to X500. No X400. And no, that’s not a typo. The number four is widely avoided in parts of East Asia, including China, because its pronunciation sounds like the word for death. So Vivo just skipped it. That detail alone tells you a lot about how carefully the company is playing this launch, and the camera specs suggest the same level of intention went into the hardware.
According to Gizmochina, Vivo has officially confirmed that the X500 series will launch in China this September with three models: the X500, X500 Pro, and X500 Pro Max. Vivo Product Manager Han Boxiao has been open about what the lineup is built around, and the answer is video. Specifically, cinema-grade video. That phrase gets thrown around a lot, so let’s look at what’s actually behind it.
The Pro models will feature a Zeiss Super Dynamic main camera, co-developed by Vivo’s BluePrint imaging team and Sony. At the center of it is the new BluePrint Guangyu 900 sensor, a 50-megapixel 1/1.28-inch unit built around high dynamic range capture. Vivo says it can hit up to 17EV of dynamic range, which it’s calling the highest in the industry. That’s a bold claim, but if it holds up in real-world testing, it matters, especially for video where blown-out skies and crushed shadows are constant headaches.
That same dynamic range extends to video capture. The X500 Pro series supports 4K 240fps slow-motion and 4K 120fps HDR video with direct HDR output. Those are numbers that would have felt absurd on a phone two years ago. The stabilization setup is also worth noting. The main camera has 3-degree OIS with what Vivo describes as gimbal-level stabilization, with CIPA 7.0 professional stabilization built in. The Pro Max in particular is being highlighted for that 3-degree OIS system, with Vivo positioning it as a genuine alternative to carrying a separate gimbal.
Tipster Digital Chat Station has also added some extra detail. The X500 series carries the internal codename “Thanos 500” and is expected to include a 200-megapixel telephoto camera, carried over from the X300 Ultra. That uses a custom large-format 200MP HP0 sensor paired with a periscope lens.
So why does any of this matter beyond Vivo fans? Because the mobile camera war is no longer just about photos. Samsung, Apple, and Google have all been pushing video quality hard, and Vivo is making a clear statement that it wants to compete at the top. A 17EV dynamic range sensor and 4K 240fps slow-motion on a phone would put real pressure on the competition, especially if the footage actually looks as good as the spec sheet promises.
