Your fingernail can scratch the inner display of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Let that sink in for a second. This is a phone that costs more than most people’s rent, and a fingernail is all it takes to leave a mark. That’s the reality of foldables in 2026, and no amount of Samsung marketing changes it.
Zack from JerryRigEverything got his hands on the Ultra model fresh off the back of his Galaxy Z Fold 8 tests, and as reported by Android Headlines, the full durability run includes a scratch test, burn test, bend test, and a complete teardown. So there’s a lot to unpack here.
Starting with the good news. The cover display is protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, and it held up pretty well. A level 6 pick left barely visible marks, and it took a level 7 to do real damage. That’s solid performance for a foldable outer screen, and puts it in line with what you’d expect from a flagship in 2026.
The inner display is a completely different story. A level 2 pick scratched it. A fingernail scratched it. This isn’t unique to Samsung, every foldable phone on the market has this problem because the flexible display material is just inherently softer than glass. But it’s still worth saying out loud, especially if you’re considering dropping top dollar on this thing without a screen protector.
The frame is aluminum, the physical buttons are removable, and the camera bump is plastic. The burn test clocked the main display surviving 9 seconds under direct flame before going dark, while the cover display lasted 10 seconds. Fun to watch, not particularly useful information, but that’s kind of the point.
Here’s where things get more interesting. The phone is not dust resistant, and Zack packed a serious amount of dirt into the hinge to prove it. The phone kept working, but you could hear the grit grinding through the hinge mechanism. Then during the second reverse bend test, the main display died. The phone didn’t snap, but the screen gave up. Worth noting that there was already a ton of dirt inside at that point, which may have contributed.
Foldables have come a long way in terms of build quality, and the Z Fold 8 Ultra is clearly a well-constructed device for what it is. But that inner display vulnerability is still the elephant in the room for the whole category. Until manufacturers solve that, premium pricing for foldables will always come with an asterisk. Handle with care. Seriously.
