Two months. That’s all it took for Bigme to move on from the HiBreak Dual 2. The company has announced the HiBreak Dual 3, and while it’s not a total reinvention, the headline upgrade is a genuinely good one: the color screen on the back is now detachable. That’s a real improvement, not a spec-sheet filler.
The Dual 2, which launched back in June as the so-called world’s first large dual-screen color e-ink phone, had a 5-inch LCD panel glued permanently to its rear. You couldn’t remove it, couldn’t leave it at home, couldn’t do anything about it. It was just there. The Dual 3 fixes that. You can actually take the color screen off, which makes the whole dual-screen concept feel more intentional and less like a party trick that got out of hand.
The e-ink display up front also gets a small but meaningful boost, jumping from 80Hz to 85Hz refresh rate. On paper that sounds minor, but e-ink refresh rates are still a big deal for usability, so any improvement counts. Bigme hasn’t confirmed the screen sizes for either display yet, and full specs are still coming. What we do know is that the Dual 3 runs on a Dimensity 8300 chip, the same processor inside the Dual 2, paired with Android 16 straight out of the box. 5G is on board, and so is dual SIM dual standby if you’re juggling two numbers.
The back of the phone also gets a visual refresh. The camera module now uses a vertical pill shape, which is very much the trend right now and likely fits a camera plus an LED. And for anyone who uses their phone as a notebook, the Dual 3 supports a 4096-level pressure-sensitive stylus. So sketching, annotating, and handwriting notes are all still part of the pitch.
Here’s the thing about this launch: Bigme is moving fast, maybe a little too fast. The Dual 2 is still technically in its Kickstarter campaign window, and now there’s already a successor. That’s a tough spot for anyone who backed the Dual 2 expecting to be on the cutting edge. But it also says something about where Bigme is headed. The company is clearly treating this as a product line, not a one-off experiment, and each version is sharpening the formula.
E-ink phones are still a niche within a niche. Most consumers aren’t walking into a phone store asking for one. But the audience that wants them, writers, readers, people who stare at screens all day and want something easier on their eyes, is real and growing. A detachable color screen is a smart concession to that crowd. You get the color display when you want it, and a cleaner, lighter device when you don’t.
