That’s what one repair expert predicts it will cost to fix the inner folding screen on Apple’s upcoming iPhone Ultra. And no, that’s not the price of the phone. That’s just the repair bill.
According to MacObserver, Ricky Panesar, founder of repair shop iCorrect, is the one throwing out that figure. He’s not pulling it from thin air either. His estimate is based on how Apple prices parts and labor compared to the competition. For reference, replacing the inner display on a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 runs around $772. That’s already painful. Apple’s version would blow past that by nearly $400.
So why so expensive? Panesar points to a familiar dynamic. Apple is sourcing its folding display panels from Samsung Display, and when Apple buys components from a supplier, it doesn’t pass the savings along to you at the repair counter. The company marks up parts aggressively, and Panesar thinks this will set a new record for screen repair pricing on any Apple device. That’s saying something, considering replacing an iPhone 15 Pro Max screen already costs over $400 through Apple.
This matters beyond just sticker shock. Foldable phones are inherently more fragile than traditional slabs. The inner display is a crease-prone, flex-stressed piece of hardware that takes more abuse than a standard screen. Foldable owners on Android have been dealing with this reality for years. Samsung, Google, and Motorola all sell fold insurance and repair plans for a reason. Apple entering this space means its fans are about to learn that lesson too, possibly the hard way.
And here’s the thing: Apple Care Plus for the iPhone Ultra will almost certainly cost more than it does for standard iPhones. Without it, a single cracked inner screen could run you more than half the price of a new budget iPhone. That changes the math on whether a foldable makes sense for anyone who isn’t extremely careful with their devices.
As for when you’ll actually be able to see this thing, Apple has confirmed its fall event for September 9. The company sent out invites for a presentation called “Surprise and Shine” happening at Apple Park in Cupertino. The event will stream live on YouTube and Apple’s website. Some reports suggest the foldable might not ship until October, but it’s expected to appear on stage that night either way.
