Overheating and random reboots are not a great look for any phone, let alone a Pixel. Google knows this, and the latest Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 is out now with a fix for exactly that, plus a whole lot more.
As reported by Android Headlines, Beta 4 is rolling out to Pixel devices right now, and it marks a key milestone: platform stability. That means developers can now finalize their apps against this version of Android, which is a strong signal that the full public release is not far off. For regular users, it also means Google is done adding major changes and is focused purely on polish and fixes.
And there are a lot of fixes. The thermal management bug that was causing devices to overheat and restart mid-use is gone. So is the 80% battery charging optimization issue that was dragging out charge times during the last 2%. That one sounds minor, but if you’re charging overnight or before a busy day, those extra minutes add up.
The list of fixes covers a pretty wide range of features:
- Screen mirroring to external USB-C XR glasses now works properly
- Gesture navigation no longer freezes when apps render below the display cutout
- Bluetooth call audio defaults to your headset, not the phone speaker
- App drawer search now actually processes text input
- Face Unlock in low light no longer skips fingerprint and jumps straight to PIN
- The notification shade can now be pulled all the way down again
- WebGL apps that were crashing the browser with shadow maps and vertex colors are fixed
- Dark mode low-contrast rendering has been patched
There are also some System UI fixes worth calling out. A bug where turning off the screen from the home screen showed a plain fade instead of the proper power button animation has been corrected. It’s a small thing, but those visual inconsistencies chip away at the overall feel of a phone. Google is clearly sweeping up the details before the stable release.
The microphone lock bug is probably the most disruptive fix in this batch. A flaw in the audio service was blocking microphone access across apps during screen recording, which would have been a real problem for anyone trying to record tutorials, clips, or anything with audio. That’s fixed now too.
QPR updates, short for Quarterly Platform Releases, are how Google ships meaningful improvements between major Android versions. They matter because they keep Pixel phones feeling current without waiting a full year for the next big release. Reaching platform stability with Beta 4 means the stable version of Android 17 QPR2 should land soon, and based on this fix list, it’s shaping up to be a genuinely useful update.
