Most tablet lineups are a mess of confusing model names and spec bumps that mean nothing to regular people. TCL is trying something different with the TAB A1 Series, and honestly, the logic behind it is refreshing. The company announced the four-model lineup at IFA 2026 in Berlin, built around a simple two-axis choice: how big do you want the screen, and what kind of display do you actually need?
Two sizes, and they’re genuinely different
The lineup splits into 11-inch and 12.2-inch tiers. The smaller TAB A1 models are slim at 6.2mm, with 2.1K resolution and refresh rates up to 90Hz. They’re aimed at people who throw a tablet in a bag and move around. Students, commuters, people who read on the couch. That kind of use.
The 12.2-inch TAB A1 Plus models step it up to 2.4K resolution, 120Hz refresh rates, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. That last part matters more than it sounds. A 3:2 screen feels noticeably less awkward for documents and web pages compared to the widescreen formats that dominate most Android tablets. More room for split-screen, more room for actual work.
The NXTPAPER display is the interesting bit
Each size comes in two display versions. Standard is straightforward, sharp and smooth, good for streaming and browsing. The NXTPAPER versions add anti-glare and anti-reflection coatings, hardware-level blue light control, and three selectable display modes. Standard Mode for normal use, Color Paper Mode for a softer look when reading or browsing, and Ink Paper Mode for a monochrome experience when you really want to focus.
There’s also a dedicated NXTPAPER Key on the Plus NXTPAPER model for switching between modes fast, plus customizable gestures for AI features and apps. So it’s not just a software filter slapped on top, which is usually how these eye-comfort features end up being gimmicks. The hardware treatment makes it a more credible pitch.
What runs on them
All four models run Android 16 with Google services and TCL’s own productivity tools built in. No big surprises there, but Android 16 is a solid base and it’s good to see the full lineup shipping with it rather than staggering versions across tiers.

That’s smart positioning, especially as tablets become more common study and work tools for people who can’t justify an iPad price tag.
The series will roll out in selected European markets. Pricing and exact availability are still being confirmed country by country, so keep an eye on local TCL channels for specifics. But the concept is sound. Sometimes a clear, simple choice is the best product decision a company can make.
