A 4,000-point single-core Geekbench score from a phone nobody has officially announced yet. That’s the kind of leak that gets your attention. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro is dropping on September 15, and based on everything we know so far, this chip could be the most interesting thing to come out of the company’s flagship lineup in years.
According to Gizmochina, MediaTek confirmed the reveal event for September 15 at 2:30 PM local time in China. The star of that show is expected to be the Dimensity 9600 Pro, which would be MediaTek’s first chip built on TSMC’s 2nm N2P process. That’s a big deal. The standard Dimensity 9600 is expected to stick with 3nm, making the Pro variant a genuinely different product rather than a mild clock speed bump with a fancier name.
The 2nm process matters because of what it means in practice. You get more performance at the same power draw, or similar performance at lower power. In a world where flagship Android phones are constantly battling heat and battery anxiety, that efficiency improvement is not a minor detail. It’s the kind of thing that separates a chip that looks good on paper from one that actually makes your phone better to use all day.
On the CPU side, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is expected to pack an eight-core configuration with two cores at 4.55GHz, three at 4.35GHz, and three at 3.10GHz. Graphics are handled by the Mali-G2-Ultra-NX MC12 GPU. Early Geekbench numbers reportedly tied to the Vivo X500 Pro Max show the chip clearing 4,000 in single-core and 13,000 in multi-core. Those are strong numbers, putting it firmly in Snapdragon 8 Elite territory on paper.
Gaming is clearly a priority here. MediaTek is teasing AI-assisted GPU rendering, an upgraded StarSpeed Engine, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Ray tracing on mobile has been more of a marketing story than a practical one so far, so it’ll be worth seeing how this actually performs in real games rather than curated demos. Still, the combination of AI rendering help and dedicated ray tracing support suggests MediaTek is serious about closing the gap with Qualcomm’s gaming credentials.
Content creators get some attention too. MediaTek is promising 4K slow-motion video at 240fps, along with additional tools aimed at mobile videographers. Slow-mo at that resolution and frame rate is genuinely useful, not just a spec to list on a box.
As for which phones will carry the Dimensity 9600 Pro, the early list includes the Vivo X500 Pro, Vivo X500 Pro Max, and the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max. These are serious flagship devices, which tells you MediaTek is positioning this chip for the top end rather than using it as a mid-cycle filler product.
The bigger picture here is that MediaTek has been closing the gap with Qualcomm for a couple of years now, and the Dimensity 9600 Pro looks like another genuine step forward. If the real-world performance matches the benchmarks and the 2nm efficiency delivers on its promise, this chip gives premium Android phones a compelling alternative to Snapdragon. September 15 can’t come fast enough.
