Variable aperture on a phone camera. That’s the headline. Apple has finally given the iPhone a feature that photographers have wanted for years, and it’s built right into the new 48MP Fusion Main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple announced both phones today, with pre-orders opening September 12 and availability starting September 18.
The camera is the real story here
Six laser-cut blades control the aperture, letting the camera shift between depth of field settings automatically or manually through four distinct stops. Shoot wide open at f/1.48 for low-light shots, or tighten up for group photos where you want crispy background detail. Pros can control it manually inside the Camera app. Developers get an API to build it into their own apps too. It’s a genuine addition, not a marketing spin.
Apple also added Apple Reference Image, a new feature that signs every pixel at the sensor level to create an unalterable reference photo. Great news for photojournalists who need to prove an image hasn’t been touched. And yes, it works with SynthID for AI-generated image detection too.
Performance and battery take a big step
The A20 Pro chip is built on a 2-nanometer process and brings some serious numbers. The GPU is up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro, memory bandwidth is up 50 percent, and the Neural Engine doubles the AI processing cores to 32 total. So on-device AI gets faster, games get smoother, and the phone should stay quick for years.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets the biggest battery life boost Apple has ever put in an iPhone. That’s a big deal for a lineup that has historically struggled to keep up with Android rivals on endurance. If Apple delivers on that claim, it changes the conversation.
