Apple just made your current smartwatch feel old. The company announced Apple Watch Series 12, and the headline feature is something Apple claims no other wearable can touch: the most accurate heart rate sensing in the category, validated against over 1,000 participants in a real scientific study. That’s not marketing fluff. That’s a direct shot at Garmin, Samsung, and everyone else.
What’s actually new under the hood
The Series 12 runs on the new S11 chip, and paired with the redesigned Health Sensing System, it now reads your heart rate every five seconds all day long. HRV measurements come up to 24 times more often than before. Battery life during outdoor workouts jumps 25 percent over the last model, and a 15-minute charge now gets you 12 hours of use. That’s a real improvement people will notice daily.
The readiness score: smart or gimmick?
Apple is introducing a readiness score, a 0-10 daily rating that pulls from your sleep, activity, training load, and vitals. It gives you one of four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. It updates throughout the day as new data comes in. Developed with exercise scientists using Apple Heart and Movement Study data, this one actually sounds grounded. Still, we’ll need real-world testing before calling it essential.
New finishes and tougher glass
Series 12 comes in dark bronze, black, light gold, space gray aluminum, radiant gold, natural titanium, and a ceramic option in pearl white and night blue. Aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass on previous aluminum models. Pre-orders are open now, with availability starting September 18.
