Siri has been the butt of the joke for years. Slow, unreliable, and embarrassingly limited compared to Google Assistant or Alexa. But with iOS 27, Apple is making a serious push to change that, and honestly, the early signs are promising.
As reported by Android Headlines, iOS 27 is available right now for iPhone 11 and newer. That’s a massive install base getting access to a meaningful update all at once. To grab it, go to Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Fair warning though, it’s a chunky download, so give it some time.
The headline feature is Siri AI, Apple’s biggest overhaul of its voice assistant since it launched back in 2011. Siri is essentially a chatbot now, trained in part by Google but running on Apple’s own Foundation Models under the hood. That’s why its answers feel distinct from what you’d get out of Gemini. You can talk to it or type to it, and there’s a new dedicated Siri app that installs alongside the update. That app lets you go back through previous conversations, which is something the old Siri could never do. It’s a small thing that makes a huge difference in day-to-day use.
There’s a catch, though. Siri AI and all Apple Intelligence features are exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and later. Apple says it comes down to the RAM requirements needed to run these features locally. So if you’re on an iPhone 14 or older, you’re getting the performance improvements but not the AI upgrades. That’s worth knowing before you get too excited.
And those performance improvements are genuinely good. The most eye-catching one is AirDrop transfers that are now 80% faster. AirDrop has always been inconsistent, failing at the worst possible moments, so speed is great, but reliability is the real win if Apple has sorted that out too. Beyond AirDrop, the update also brings:
- Faster HomeKit accessory pairing
- Faster Apple Music playback start
- Faster message loading in the Mail app
- Faster data updates in the Health app
- Faster window closing in iPadOS
None of these are glamorous, but they’re the kind of polish that makes a phone feel noticeably snappier in daily use. Apple knows its users notice this stuff.
The compatibility list is also worth talking about. iOS 27 runs on everything from the brand new iPhone 17 lineup all the way back to the iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE 2nd generation. We’re talking about phones released in 2019. That’s a long tail of software support that very few Android brands can match. While some Android manufacturers now promise seven years of updates, those are explicit commitments. Apple just quietly keeps supporting old hardware, which is a big reason iPhone owners hold onto their devices longer than most Android users do.
Bottom line: iOS 27 is a real update. The Siri AI upgrade alone is worth paying attention to, even if it’s gated to newer Pro models for now. If you’ve been skeptical of Siri for years, this might actually be the moment to give it another shot.
