Xiaomi teased something weird last week. A cryptic image. The word ‘Generating’ sitting on the back screen of what we now know is the Xiaomi 18 Pro. At the time, nobody knew what it meant. Now we do, and honestly, it’s one of the more interesting things a phone manufacturer has done with a secondary display in a while.
As reported by Gizmochina, the rear display on the Xiaomi 18 Pro series can now run AI-generated mini-apps that users create themselves, directly from the back of the phone. Xiaomi is calling it the ‘Versatile Back Screen,’ and the name does a decent job of describing what it actually does.
So instead of picking from a fixed list of widgets like every other dual-screen phone out there, you describe what you need and the system builds a small app for it on the spot. Xiaomi’s official teaser shows off a handful of examples: an egg-cooking timer, a water-drinking reminder, a Pomodoro focus timer, an English vocabulary card for learning new words, and a recipe recommendation tool. None of those are flashy. But that’s kind of the point. These are small, specific, useful things that would normally require you to pull out your phone, open an app, and dig around. Here, they live on the back screen and stay out of your way.
This builds directly on the MiShare back screen that Xiaomi introduced with the Xiaomi 17 Pro last year. And that feature clearly caught on. According to Xiaomi, users interacted with its app cards more than 4 million times a day and added over 3.5 million wallpapers daily. Those are big numbers, and they explain why Xiaomi went bigger with the follow-up instead of just tweaking what already worked.
Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi’s Mobile Phone Division, acknowledged that back-screen needs are different for every user, which is why the company moved toward a more open, generative approach this year. It’s a smart framing. Rather than guessing what widgets people want, they’re letting people build exactly what they need, pin the useful ones, and ignore the rest.
Secondary screens on phones have had a rough track record. They show up on a spec sheet, look impressive in a promo video, and then most people never actually use them past the first week. The difference here is that the app-building angle gives the rear display a reason to stay relevant over time. Your needs change, you build something new. That loop could genuinely keep the feature from going stale.
The Xiaomi 18 Pro series is confirmed to launch this month, and Xiaomi has called it the biggest upgrade in the digital series’ history. Alongside the rear screen updates, expect improvements across:
- Performance and chipset
- Camera hardware and software
- Battery capacity and charging speed
- AI features throughout the system
More details are coming as the launch gets closer. But right now, the back screen is the thing worth watching. If the AI app generation actually works well in practice, this could push other manufacturers to think harder about what a secondary display is actually for. And if it doesn’t work well, it’ll just be another gimmick. We’ll find out soon enough.
