Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 benchmark scores just leaked, and Apple should pay attention

Qualcomm is announcing new chips tomorrow, and someone in China couldn’t wait. A leaked engineering prototype of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 just showed up in a video, and the benchmark numbers are close enough to Apple’s A20 Pro to make this a genuinely interesting fight.

According to Android Headlines, a Chinese content creator uploaded footage of the engineering prototype showing its Geekbench 6 results alongside new packaging designed to improve thermals. The chip uses a 2+3+3 CPU cluster configuration. The two performance cores hit 5.10GHz, three more run at 4.00GHz, and the final three sit at 3.74GHz. On Geekbench 6, it posted 4,327 points in the single-core test and 12,873 points in the multi-core test.

Compare that to the Apple A20 Pro: 4,725 single-core, 12,575 multi-core. So Qualcomm’s chip edges ahead in multi-core performance, while Apple still wins on single-core. Neither lead is massive. These two chips are trading punches, which is exactly the kind of competition Android fans have been hoping for after years of Apple pulling clear ahead on raw CPU performance.

The thermal side of things is worth watching too. Qualcomm is introducing something called a Heat Pass Block, basically a more aggressive heatsink setup that pulls heat away from the chip faster. Sustained performance has been a real-world weakness for Snapdragon chips in the past, where benchmark numbers look great but drop off under extended load. If the Heat Pass Block actually delivers, that’s a meaningful upgrade for phones running demanding tasks or extended gaming sessions.

One detail that’s still unresolved is memory placement. On the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, Samsung DRAM sits on top of the chip. Apple places its memory on the side with the A20 Pro. Both approaches have thermal and bandwidth implications, and it’s not yet clear which layout gives a real-world advantage. That’s a detail chip nerds will be arguing about for months.

It’s also worth remembering that Qualcomm is announcing two chips at Snapdragon Summit 2026 tomorrow. This prototype is the higher-end “Elite Extreme” variant. A base model, the Snapdragon 8 Extreme Gen 6, is coming alongside it. Two chips, one event, a lot riding on the performance story Qualcomm tells.

Zooming out, the chipset race heading into late 2026 is shaping up to be the most competitive it’s been in years. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, Apple’s A20 Pro, and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro are the three chips that matter at the top end. Everything else is a tier below. If you’re buying a flagship phone in the next six to twelve months, one of those three processors is going to be inside it. Based on what we’re seeing from this leak, the gap between Qualcomm and Apple is smaller than it’s been in a long time. And that’s good for everyone.
