Vivo’s OriginOS 7 is here, and it’s making some bold promises

Six years of smooth performance. That’s the headline claim from Vivo as it announced the global version of OriginOS 7, its Android 17-based software skin. It’s a big promise, and honestly, it’s the kind of thing every Android maker says. But Vivo is at least putting some engineering muscle behind it.

OriginOS 7 is built around what Vivo calls the next-gen Origin Smooth Engine, a redesigned system that touches graphics computation, memory management, and system scheduling. The idea is that the whole OS feels snappy not just on day one, but years down the line. Ultra-Core Computing sits underneath all of this, dynamically shifting processing resources to wherever the demand is highest at any given moment. In practice, Vivo says app cold start times are 10% faster than OriginOS 6, and app page switching is 11% quicker. Memory Fusion is also part of the package, making memory allocation more efficient across the board.

On the visual side, Vivo is leaning hard into physics-based motion. Every swipe and tap is supposed to follow natural physics principles, while a feature called Fluid Motion introduces what the company describes as liquid-inspired dynamics, where interface elements stretch, bounce, and merge depending on how fast and in which direction your finger is moving. That sounds like it could either feel genuinely satisfying or just gimmicky. We’ll have to wait for hands-on time to know which.

Then there’s the Apple angle, which is arguably the most surprising part of this whole thing. OriginOS 7 can pair with an Apple Watch to show notifications and sync health and workout data into Vivo’s own Origin Health app. AirPods battery levels show up in Origin Island, and there’s even Spatial Audio support. Vivo Office Kit, the company’s productivity suite, also works across iPad, macOS, and Windows. This cross-ecosystem push is smart. Android phones playing nicely with Apple hardware has been a friction point for years, and any steps toward fixing that are worth paying attention to.

Vivo’s AI assistant Jovi is integrated throughout OriginOS 7, coordinating tasks across connected phones and computers. It’s the kind of cross-device personal agent that Samsung and Google have both been building toward, so Vivo is clearly not sitting that race out.

For the personalization crowd, there are several new features worth knowing about:

  • Wiggle Theme turns photos into interactive liquid surfaces that ripple and bounce when you touch them
  • Glint Theme uses the gyroscope to cast realistic light and shadow effects across wallpapers as you tilt the phone
  • StickIt lets you build layered, dynamic collages from photos and Live Photos on your lock screen, home screen, and Always-On Display
  • Pet Pals adds interactive animated pets to your screen that react to motion, charging status, and music playback

Some of these are genuinely fun, others lean toward the gimmick end of the spectrum. Pet Pals, for instance, feels like a feature that gets turned off within a week. But Wiggle Theme and Glint Theme could actually add some character to the experience without getting annoying.

Right now, OriginOS 7 is available as an open beta for the Vivo X300 Pro and select iQOO devices, though it appears to be limited to India, Thailand, and Malaysia for the moment. A wider rollout hasn’t been confirmed yet. Given that this launch is paired with the Vivo X500 series announcement, it’s a safe bet the X500 lineup will ship with OriginOS 7 out of the box when it hits global markets. If Vivo’s performance claims hold up in real-world use, this could be one of the more compelling Android skins to watch in 2026.
