Acer’s Sospiro A70 puts a second screen on the back, and it’s actually useful for selfies

Rear screens on phones are usually a gimmick. A little panel that shows a clock and some notifications is a party trick you stop noticing after a week. The Acer Sospiro A70 at least gives its second display a real job: helping you take better selfies.

Acer’s Latin American division announced the phone, and it follows the Sospiro A15 from July. That one was a 4G LTE model with the same dual-screen idea. The A70 adds 5G, which is the upgrade that matters most here. Budget phones without 5G are starting to feel stuck in the past, even in regions where networks are still rolling out.

The main screen is a 6.67-inch IPS panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a waterdrop notch. The resolution is HD+ at 720 x 1600, so don’t expect razor-sharp text. But 120Hz at this tier is a nice touch, because scrolling feels smoother even if the pixels are a bit soft. That waterdrop notch is also very 2020, but it’s cheap and it works.

Now the fun part. The rear display is a 1.88-inch TFT panel at 240 x 284 pixels. It’s small and low-res, but it doesn’t need to be anything else. Flip the phone around, and you can see yourself while the 64-megapixel main camera shoots the frame. That’s smart. Front cameras are almost always worse than rear ones, so using the better sensor for selfies is a real quality boost, not a marketing line.

Here’s the camera setup in short:

  • 64MP rear camera with an AI sensor and LED flash
  • 16MP front camera with its own flash
  • 1.88-inch rear display for framing shots with the main camera

The front camera is still there for video calls and quick snaps, so you get a choice. That flexibility is the whole appeal.

The catch is that Acer hasn’t given a price. And honestly, price decides everything with a phone like this. The regional product page lists red, black, and white options, and the phone looks aimed squarely at Latin America. There’s no word on a wider release, so most buyers elsewhere will be watching from the sidelines.

Why does this matter? Acer has been a small player in phones for years, and it’s now trying regional, design-led models to get noticed. Rear screens are also creeping into more mid-range and budget devices, after living mostly on pricier flagships. If Acer lands the price right, the A70 could be a cheap way to get better selfies without paying flagship money.

If it’s priced too high, though, it’s just another average HD+ phone with a quirky back. I’m cautiously into it. The idea is good, the 5G is overdue, and the execution looks sensible. Now Acer just needs to tell us what it costs.
