Huawei Pura 90 Plus brings curves back to a flat-edge family

Everyone is making flat-edge phones right now, so it’s a little refreshing that Huawei’s newest Pura goes the other way. The Pura 90 Plus has a curved frame and a rounded back, and it’s the only model in its family that does.

Huawei announced that pre-orders opened in China today at 10:08 through VMall, Experience Stores, and other authorized retailers. Early buyers get some exclusive perks, though Huawei hasn’t spelled them out. The official launch is next week, and shipments are expected before November 8.

A different shape in the Pura 90 lineup

Huawei launched the Pura 90, Pura 90 Pro, and Pura 90 Pro Max in April, and all three have flat edges. The Plus goes back to the softer look of the Pura 80 Pro, with a curved frame and rounded rear panel. That’s a smart move. Flat edges look sharp, but plenty of people still prefer a phone that feels smooth in the hand.

The first teaser shows the phone in Sunset Purple, a purple and orange gradient that is also available on the Pura 90 Pro Max. The camera module keeps the series’ inverted triangle layout in the upper-right corner. So the Plus still looks like a Pura from the back, just with rounder edges.

What leaks say about the hardware

Huawei hasn’t confirmed any specs yet, so treat everything below as rumor. The phone is reportedly codenamed Lucia and should sit between the standard Pura 90 and the Pura 90 Pro.

  • A 50MP 1-inch RYYB main camera with a physical variable aperture
  • Huawei’s Kirin 9020 chip with eight CPU cores at 2.5GHz, 2.15GHz, and 1.6GHz
  • A Maleoon 920 GPU
  • A 6.8-inch display with 1.5K resolution

The camera is the part to watch. RYYB sensors swap some green pixels for yellow ones to pull in more light. The variable aperture lets the lens control how much light gets in and how much of the scene stays sharp. Unlike a lot of phone camera buzzwords, a physical aperture is a real hardware feature, and it’s still rare.

Pricing and why it matters

There’s no price yet. For context, the Pura 90 Pro starts at 5,499 yuan and the standard Pura 90 starts at 4,699 yuan. If the Plus lands between them, that would make sense for its rumored spot in the lineup.

The bigger point is that Huawei is willing to split its flagship family by design, not just by specs. A curved model next to three flat ones gives buyers an actual choice about how the phone feels, not only how much it costs. And in a market where most flagships look nearly identical, that counts for something.

Still, the Kirin 9020 and the 1.5K screen don’t sound like a huge leap, so the camera will need to carry this phone. We’ll know more when Huawei confirms the full specs and pricing at next week’s launch event.
