Apple patent application hints at theft-detecting, security-enabled power adaptors for iPhone

Apple is all about protecting it’s products from theft, it seems. An Apple patent application, filed in late 2005, outlines plans for security-enabled power adapters that will disable the power adapter for, say, an iPhone, when certain parameters are not met. The device would detect unauthorized use by requiring certain actions to be taken in specific time-intervals to authenticate the user. When these actions are not performed, or triggers such as the iPhone leaving a set geographical area are tripped, the power adaptor would force the device to run dry and eventually cease to operate. The patent also makes provisions for limiting the devices functionality until the user is authenticated.

The system would allow the user to enter a passcode to prevent security measures from automatically being enabled.

It would be nice to see our super-precious Apple iPhone with it’s own security system installed. We’re sure that a hot product like the iPhone will be attracting the attention of ruffians everywhere. And, having a system like this, or that other theft protection system, would deter those would-be mal-contents. Or, you know, we could just start packin’ heat.
