QTel looking to expand into Libya and/or Iran

Qatar’s QTel is eager to expand across the Middle East, North Africa and Asia – according to the firm’s chief executive. In an interview with Dow Jones, Nasser Marafih said that Libya is already being looked at. “In Libya, we are waiting for the government to make an announcement when they are going to start the process,” Marafih said, without giving additional details.

He also said that they are studying looking at Iran, where a third mobile license is still up for grabs. “We have not decided on how to move because we still need clearance from the government,” Marafih added.

For the record, QTel operates in 17 countries but is looking to expand to other markets. In March of this year, the operator forecast its net profit in 2009 to grow between 9 and 11 percent from QAR2.3 billion ($615 million) in 2008. At the same time, revenue was forecast to increase between 20 and 22 percent in 2009, while EBITDA was estimated to rise between 18 and 20 percent…
