Apple iPhone does Enterprise – will have standard OSX VPN-client and Quick Look for Word and Excel Files

Apple iPhone may be an enterprise phone with the iPhone as a business phone

While the Apple iPhone isn’t, at first glance, a shoe-in for an Enterprise role within Corporate America, it will be able to pull its weight as a business-phone. The iPhone will feature the same VPN client that we see on full-blown Mac OSX – giving the iPhone the ability to connect to Mac and Windows VPN servers on L2tp or PPTP over IPSEC. If all those acronyms are just a little beyond you, don’t worry, your IT guy can take care of it. There are also rumors that the email client on the iPhone will be compatible with IMAP over an SSL (secure) connection.

There is also the Quick Look function that will allow users to view, but not edit, Microsoft Word and Excel files. Although you can easily edit these documents using Google Docs and Spreadsheets through the Safari browser, not having a native document editor does hurt the iPhone’s enterprise aspirations. Quick Looks will be used to view images, text files, PDFs, and the Word and Excel documents.

Oh, and don’t forget that Apple may be working with Microsoft to bring Direct Push email to the iPhone – something that will be incredibly attractive to CrackBerry addicts!

What do you think? Would you use the iPhone as a business-phone? (if the soft-keyboard turns out to work as well as the BlackBerry keyboard)
