SK Telecom shows off system-on-chip Android SIM protype

Ever stop and think where the SIM card was going? If it would somehow do more than connect you to your mobile network, and save a couple texts and contacts? Nor have I, but SK Telecom seems to think that the SIM card is in need of an overhaul, and have managed to put Android, CPU, and 1GB of storage into one without sacrificing much of the original’s size!

By implementing these features solely into a SIM card, this could drive the cost of mobile phone hardware down. That could possibly bring smartphone features to dumbphones, and keep them at a reasonable price for the customer.  One of the nicest things about the new technology is that if you were to get a new phone, all you would have to do is drop your SIM in and instantly have your contacts, applications, and all your personal settings from your previous phone in the new phone. This would save time for the user and they could adjust better to the new hardware.

It is almost certain that new phones would be needed to support the new SIM card, as it is slightly larger than ones today. Also, while the SIM itself may help the cost of phone hardware, it is probable that the new SIMs will cost much, much more than traditional SIM cards. Since this is just a prototype, pricing and availability are more than likely nowhere near being finalized, but this is definitely something to keep your eye out for!
