Motorola i1 Brings Android, Ruggedness and Push to Talk to the Yard

The Motorola i1 has gone all official-like at CTIA today, offering push-to talk over Sprint’s iDEN network, Wi-Fi, and a 5 megapixel camera, topped with a dollop of Android and wrapped a velvety coat of military-spec ruggedness. Plain Jane vanilla Android here – no Blur, but the folks who use PTT and need a rugged frame aren’t really the types to horse around with social networking. Opera Mini 5 is preloaded, interestingly enough; the native Android browser isn’t that much in need of help, is it?

You might recognize the Motorola i1 more readily as the Opus One, which has made the rounds since December. I’m kind of curious how well Android does in the industrial sphere, namely because there are a lot of options for super-niche-y soft applications, and even tooling around with the OS itself if you’re looking for deeper custom-tailoring.

No doubt our boys at ground zero in Las Vegas will get some hands-on time at CTIA – be sure to keep an eye out for hands-on pictures and video soon! For a closer look now, and to sign up for notifications for the Summer launch, you can check out the Motorola i1 at Sprint.
