Skyfire opens up Android alpha testing, gets overwhelmed

Skyfire, the makers of the mobile web browser that bears their namesake, has just announced that it is starting alpha testing for its Android browser. Unfortnately, the Skyfire browser, which can stream any and all embedded media to compatible Windows Mobile and Symbian-powered smartphones, garnered so much interest for its Android alpha testing program, that the company has already closed the doors to the early tester program.

The overwhelming response makes sense. Skyfire is the only browser capable of displaying all manner of rich multimedia content on mobile phones that would otherwise be left with error boxes where video or interactive menus were embedded. And, with Skyfire’s recent acquisition of the Steel Android web browser, Skyfire is on track to bang out a slick, Webkit-based Android browser with the ability to stream online video with abandon. The chance to play with a pre-release version of this browser was apparently met with a flood of requests that took Skyfire by surprise.

If you’re running Android 1.5 OS and above, you are technically qualified for the alpha program. Alas, all you can do at this point is lament the closure of Skyfire’s tester program.

We’ll show you what you’re missing with Skyfire Android shortly!
