O2 pushes HTC Desire launch back to mid-May

Waiting to get your hands on an HTC Desire from O2 in the UK? Well, seeing as how we were expecting the Desire to launch on O2 in April and we’re only a few days away from May, it doesn’t look like O2 is going to meet their initial launch goals for the Android smartphone. Indeed, O2 has officially confirmed that they won’t be able to launch the Desire until mid-May. The carrier is citing delays in launch preparations – whatever that means – as the reason for pushing back the launch.

The HTC Desire, known previously by its internal HTC codename “Bravo,” is one of this year’s hottest Android phones. As well it should be – it’s essentially a slightly toned-down GSM version of the HTC Incredible, which is closely related to the HTC-made Google Nexus One. A quick overview of the Desire’s spec-sheet should make this point quite clear. The handset sports a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera (with LED flash), 3G data connectivity, WiFi, GPS, microSD card slot, optical trackpad, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

To top it all off, the Desire runs on Android 2.1 OS with the Sense UI skinned atop. The customized HTC UI features the new “Leap” feature, which makes navigating through your different homescreen panes as easy as pinching the screen. Rather than swipe from pane to pane, you can just pinch the screen and choose the pane you’d like to navigate to. And, with the new FriendFeed widget, you’ll always know what your friends on all your social networks are up to.

Unfortunately, you’ll be waiting for a couple more weeks before O2 will make the HTC Desire available in the UK. All signs point to a mid-May launch at this point. Pricing should come in at £99 (~ $152), or higher, depending on your monthly service plan.
