Google Service Whispers Ads in Middle of Phone Calls (Joke)

Oh, The Onion, your sense of irreverent satire never gets old. In this gag video, we’re shown a completely fictional (but frighteningly believable) new Google service on the Nexus One that uses voice recognition to to detect keywords in a phone call, and deliver audio advertisements in the middle of the conversation, with the end result being reduced call rates. It might seem ridiculous to those ads interrupting your call, but it doesn’t seem completely crazy that an Android service would offer pre-connection ads for cheap rates over Google Voice, which, by the way, already does ample voice recognition when it transcribes your incoming voicemails to text.

Ringtones that are not-so-subtle advertisements actually sounds like something a third party could pick up relatively easily, especially if they can offer some kind of coupon or perks if they can verify people are using the appropriate ringtone. Premium links with Android GPS directions doesn’t seem that far off, since we already see sponsored links in Google Maps search results. The ultimate and most bizarre situation shown in this video involves Google capturing your voice and using it to call your friends to make automated audio advertisements. Google really is just recruiting us to be their legion of advertising robots, aren’t they?
