Qualcomm is opening a new, multi-million dollar R&D Center in Shanghai, as part of its ongoing efforts to both utilize the growing pool of telecommunications engineering talent and enhance local R&D capabilities for the Chinese market.
The new center will focus on advancing chipset solutions to better address China’s increasing need for affordable 3G handsets with customized features and time-to-market advantages. The Shanghai center is Qualcomm’s second R&D facility in China. The company’s first such center is in Beijing, and there are also branch offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
Commenting on the new R&D Center opening, Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, said: “We are very excited about the expansion of Qualcomm’s research and development activities in China, including the establishment of the new R&D center in Shanghai, which will enable our partners to bring a greater breadth and depth of 3G devices at a faster pace to one of the world’s most rapidly expanding mobile markets.
