
LiMo Foundation refuses to die. I guess it’s the carriers to blame as they don’t like when a third-party — whether it’s a dedicated platform developer or handset maker — controls the user experience.
Anyway, they announced that three major operators will offer LiMo-powered handsets this year. So far only Vodafone has launched a LiMo device in Europe, while 60 other LiMo models were launched elsewhere, mostly in Japan and South Korea.
Morgan Gillis, Executive Director at LiMo foundation, said that three companies from the group of France Telecom, Telefonica, Verizon or SK Telecom would introduce new phones using the alternative operating system by the end of this year.
Most surprisingly, Gillis said he expected that Nokia’s Symbian could make a good come-back, adding that it will take another 12-15 months before we know how successful all the efforts are.
In the mid-term he expects a consolidation in mobile operating systems that would end in 4-5 mobile operating systems on the market. In addition to LiMo, he said Symbian, Android, Windows and Apple’s iPhone were the most likely candidates for other positions…
