World-leading mobile phone manufacturer Nokia may use Islamic motifs in its coming designs, one of the firm’s top designers told Referans as he spoke about the future of the mobile phone industry.

Islamic culture is actually a tremendous source for inspiration and influence in art and design, said Nokia’s Design Director Eero Miettinen.

Islamic culture will become a mega trend, not just on mobile phones, Miettinen predicted, but also in the fashion industry and other sectors. "Turkey is an incredible source of inspiration for Islamic culture and design for us," he said.

Every one out of three Nokia designs are created in Finland, and two-thirds of creations are inspired by 24 different countries, Miettinen said. While creating future designs, one important aspect will be to encounter as many cultures and people as possible, he said, adding that he was in constant contact with numerous local universities and institutions in various countries.

Miettinen said that in markets like Turkey, more complicated and more expensive products were being sought.

Maybe they’re talking about the fashion line? I like solid colors, and I like good old fashioned 90 degree angles. My ThinkPad and E61 really say that about me.
