I was reading a review of a new Samsung (listen they make great phones too) HSDPA mobile phone when I stumbled across this screenshot. Their icons are so much better and easier on the eyes.

Those are quite stereotypical Web 2.0 icons that people tend to laugh at. Add a little gloss and reflection and you got yourself a “fancy” icon. Too much going on in those, in my opinion.

(Notice you have a little there=their typo in your post?)

  • Stefan Constantinescu

    Thank for that correction Minna

As for the gloss, atleast it isn’t as full of bling as the Nokia PC Suite. They have transparency, menu fade ins and outs.

It’s a balance, and I could only tell so much from a screen shot you know?

  • Minna

I must be so corrupted by fade ins and outs that I hadn’t even noticed that about PC Suite! I was just comparing the icons. One thing I don’t like about the Nokia icons and PC Suite design is the amount and shade of blue (oops, maybe this isn’t the best site to bring this up ;-) I like your choice of blue(s) better, though). Also all the default themes (at least on my N73) are too blue but that’s another story.

  • Stefan Constantinescu

    You are a female right?

Maybe Nokia should hire some women for their design team, not to say I don’t like masculine, hard, straight edge designs. However when it comes to something like software … anything to make using an application better is great in my opinion.

  • Minna

Well yeah, I’m a female but I’m not a “I like pink and fluffiness” kind of female (the L’Amour line doesn’t appeal to me). Gadgets, FPS games, and gore are closer to my heart. I just don’t like the kind of blue that Nokia uses (I think it’s because it’s so close to the primary colour, too pure in a way). That blue in the screen shot, on the other hand, is quite nice…

I simply can’t get my head around why there are blue themes on a phone that comes only in two shades of red (red and plum) — I’ve never seen a mocha N73. But I’ll stop ranting about that; themes are just blingbling, I suppose.

  • Stefan Constantinescu

I don’t use themes either, but what I’m trying to push for is a better out of the box experience. Nokia’s official turquoise theme is great on the eyes and just feels more comfortable to use.

    Check it out: http://blogs.s60.com/tommi/2006/09/exclusive_download_the_new_tur.html

  • Minna

Oh yeah, I love Turquoise! (If only it came in a more red/purple colour, too… ;-) ) But Turquoise is definitely better than the current default theme. I think it’s going to be the default on S60v3 FP1 phones? Or maybe just added to the few pre-installed themes.

I honestly have to stop talking about themes now – I’ve sidetracked way too much. Happy New Year from Finland (we just hopped to 2007 a while ago)! :-)
