S60 Annoyance: Hit 2 twice, see it once

Take an S40 phone. Leave it alone until it goes in to screen saver mode. Hit a number on the keypad. What happens?

The screensaver turns off, and the number you hit on the keypad is now on your screen.

Take my Nokia E61. It’s in screen saver moder. Hit a number on the keypad. What happens?

The screen saver turns off. That’s it. At this point I have to push that number again for it to show up on my screen.

When I was using the N93 I didn’t have this problem because it was a flip phone. Now that I’m back to using my E61 I never realized how annoying this bug is!

Is it the same on your candy bar S60 devices?

    yes, it is (E70)

it can be tricky when attempting emergency call…

It’s not a bug though. It’s expected for a smartphone. Say you were in the middle of editing a spreadsheet cell or a contact record when you got interrupted. You wouldn’t then want your new keystroke to both clear the screensaver AND be inserted into the current application, would you?

  • PanosM

Yes, in my N80 does it too!!!

    @ Steve:
If I wanted not to edit then I would press the up or down just to get out of the ScreenSaver!!!

When we press a number key we want it to be shown on the screen!!! That is all!!!
I ‘ll have to agree with Stefan here!!

Steve: I didn’t think about it from that perspective. Good point. However the phone should be smart enough to know when no application is running in the foregound.

The behavior I described for should only take place then if the user is at the stand by screen once the screen saver is turned off.

After all how often do you leave an application running? I usually close mine once I’m finished doing whatever it is I’m doing to conserve battery life.

same with E50. Pressing a key only turns the screensaver off

I disagree with you folks..This behaviour is better than with S40 devices. If the screensaver is turned on, it means that it’s been a while since did something with the phone. You mayby don’t even remember what application you left running. You press something and it shows what you were doing.

There are different kind of applications as well, some numbers are used as shortcuts as well..Now you can just crab the phone and in the same time you press something, then you adjust it to the right position in your hand to operate it and screen is lit already.

We can disagree if this is good or not, but I think it’s not a bug.

And of course don’t forget the automatic keylock..:)
