Finish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia seems to have plans to invest 200 million Euro in a mobile phone factory and research center in Cluj, Romania, which is said to create somewhere around 15,000 new jobs.

According to Marius Nicoara, the chairman of the Cluj City Council, the final discussion between Nokia and representatives of the County Council will be held on the 20th of March which will be followed by a decision regarding the possibility of investing in Romania.

Nokia officials have confirmed that Romania was one of the several locations they are considering for the opening of a new plant. Aside from that, the mobile phone company refused to provide any other details.

"Given that demand for mobile phones is seeing a steady increase, Nokia has looked into opportunities of increasing its production capacities in order to meet the growing demand from customers. Nokia confirms that it is examining various opportunities to build a new production facility in a number of locations, and one of the possible locations has been identified as Romania. However, since no final decision has been made on this matter, we have no comment to make, for the time being," Anna Simai, Communications Manager for Nokia Hungary & Romania told ZF.

After its acquisition of Intellisync, a provider of Data and PIM Synchronization software for mobile devices, that was complete in February last year, Nokia also kept a research center in Cluj. With things going pretty well there, in a way, it makes sense for them to take the area into account when thinking about building a new mobile phone factory.

Nice to see Nokia giving my motherland a factory. The decision is still up in the air. We will find out soon enough.
