Following NTT DoCoMo’s lead, the other Asian carrier will be using what it calls a “Portable Open Platform Initiative” for their future handset. The software development side of the mobile phone industry accounts for some of the heaviest research and development costs. So, by using a common mobile operating system across all of Softbank’s offerings will help speed up and ease development of new handsets and applications.
