You read it right. Apparently, men are yakking it up a bit more, on average, than women – at least on mobile phones. The survey, conducted by International Communications Research for AT&T, was completed in May 2007 and comprised of 1,006 respondents (half male, half female). Men averaged 458 wireless minutes per month, while women averaged 453 monthly wireless minutes. It’s rather surprising that the women would be talking less on mobile phones than men – but the flip-side of that coin is that women averaged 532 landline (home phone) minutes, while men averaged 237 landline minutes. Not to mention that men were using their wireless minutes more for business while women were used them for talking to friends and family.
The study has been running in the same fashion since 2001 and has seen women steadily increasing their wireless usage – 2007 data represents the smallest gap between the sexes. But, overall, it seem the stereotype of women chatting it up more in general still holds, at least when you factor in total wireless and landline minutes and purpose of calls.
So, women do like to talk more than men. Surprised? We thought not.
