iTunes 7.4 has barely been out long enough for people to get used to the idea of iTunes-compatible ringtones for our iPhones. Now we’re already working with iTunes version 7.4.1. So, what’s different?
Not much, apparently. Aside from the fact that any previously home-made ringtones that you uploaded using that slick .m4r file-renaming-workaround are now invalid, iTunes seems to be no different after the update.
But fear not, iTunes-compatible ringtone fan, a simple renaming of that .m4r file back to .m4a will fix your ringtone to work on your iPhone. So, what did Apple do here? We suspect they just changed the file extension that iTunes uses for ringtones – in other words, iTunes now uses .m4a files rather than .m4r files.
