Apple to open iPhone to 3rd party developers with release of Leopard?

There are rumors going around the web that the totally irrelevant release of Leopard might also give way to the iPhone being opened up to 3rd-party developers for new applications. Apparently, Apple will not fully open its iPhone platform to all the developers, but at least initially, to the major software companies. The rumor further suggests EA is already on board and that they will port the existing line of iPod games to the new platform.

Leopard

The way I see it, Leopard is an important step forward for Mac OS, hence the new core and apps may also influence or directly change parts of the Mac OS code in the iPhone. In addition, existing iPod game publishers certainly want to jump into new Mac OS based iPods, so why not open the platform for them?

As always, it’s still too early to make any conclusions, and at this stage we can only hope Apple does think the way its users do — that we DO want more native apps!
