trolltechteam What does Motorola and Symbian think of Nokias Trolltech purchase?

A Symbian Spokesperson gave a statement to ZD|Net and apparently said they are thrilled that Nokia (NYSE: NOK) plans to port Qt to S60 and it agrees with Nokia’s statement that this purchase will make S60 more competitive in the marketplace.

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) told Linux Devices that since joining the LiMo foundation over a year ago they’ve been in the process of switching to GTK; none of Motorola’s development tools are based on Qt either.

There you have it. The whole mobile industry is sitting on their hands trying to understand why Nokia purchased Trolltech. I think they did it to reduce coding redundancy, others say Nokia plans on gutting Symbian, frankly we will not know what the outcome is for at least a year or two since that is typically how much time it takes for a mobile phone to be conceived, prototyped and shipped.

nokia trolltech What does the Trolltech buyout mean for other Mobile Linux vendors?Definitely enjoyed reading this ARCchart article by Matt Lewis. In a nutshell he says that Trolltech was practically the only Linux vendor making money, they’ve been around forever and the purchase price of $153 million by Nokia is in line with what the company was worth over 2 years ago. How are other Linux vendors expected to react to this cold hard reality that frankly no one cares about them?

Thanks for the link Jouni Miettunen. Recommend read for people into mobile platforms.

Accenture demos a supercomputer that fits into your pocket

Accenture demos a supercomputer that fits into your pocket

Instead of shoving a really fast, battery hungry processor, inside a mobile phone Accenture choose to offload the computing to a nearby laptop that did all the maths and then transferred the results back to the low powered LG feature phone shown above. It sounds great in theory, but will it scale? Will latency ruin the user experience? Will operators be happy that the network is being flooded with data going out to be processed and the results coming back in?

Too early to tell, but definitely something to watch out for. Intel and ARM would rather that processing power be inside your mobile phone, because they make more money selling processor dies, where as Accenture’s solution can drive data usage and therefore increase the use of underutilized 3G networks.

femtonsn Nokia Siemens Networks selects Ubiquisys for 3G femto cell solution

Nokia Siemens Networks has selected Ubiquisys to cooperate and market 3G femto cell solutions to operators around the world. A brief introduction to femto cells: your mobile operator gives you a box that you connect to your broadband internet, now that box handles your voice and data versus the cell tower somewhere in your neighborhood. You benefit by getting signal in your home where you otherwise wouldn’t and they benefit by removing the load off their cell towers. It is a win win situation in theory, but I’m unaware of any operators who have deployed a large cell femtocell augmented network.

Some may find this relevant: Google in July of 2007 invested in Ubiquisys. The exact amount isn’t known, but is less than $25 million.

1 30 08 bart fare Contactless payment system being trialed on the San Francisco BART230 people in the San Francisco Bay area are trialing electronic wallets embedded into Samsung mobile phones that allow them to pay for public transport and fast food. They’re probably using NFC, but CBS (3 minute video) is too afraid to get too geeky on us and explain the actual technology. Consumers shouldn’t have to know how it works, they just need to know it is safe and reliable. If trials are successful then they’ll roll this out throughout the country, half a decade after Japan.

In a video that looks to create dollar signs in the eyes of sports therapy professionals and make sufferers of carpal tunnel syndrome even more uneasy, KEYnetik, makers of RockNscroll, are demoing an application that uses the accelerometer inside the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) N95 to act as an input mechanism.

I can’t imagine doing this for more than 30 seconds much less all day.
