Right, something a bit farther afield for this post – let’s go to Singapore for some news on Mobile TV….

As of tomorrow, SingTel should have launched it’s (streaming) mio Mobile TV serivce. “For S$6 a month during the promotional period (usual price is S$9.90), SingTel postpaid customers will be able to stream live TV via a client installed on selected mobile phones. Pay-per-view for the programs and on-demand videos (VOD) will also be available at S$0.50 per 10 minutes and per clip, respectively.”

Being an application on-device, there will of course be other features available, including an EPG (electronic program guide) that will show programmes up to 7 days in advance – from September, subscribers will also be able to issue record requests back to their home set-top boxes too!

However, because the TV offering is via an application, there is limit to the devices that can be used – the app format is Flash (about 200kb in size), so only 10 Nokia (S60 I would assume) devices are supported, including the upcoming N78

SingTel is also said to be considering how DVB-H could be leveraged in to their offering at a later date.

As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas! He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to 'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device) isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question of why you continue to use it...
