Reuters is reporting that users of Mobiles in the UK are diversifying their usage of device from just making calls, to include sending texts, taking pics, and checking the interweb on the move. Nothing surprising there I’m sure you’ll agree, but the stats (which is derived from the Mobile Data Association’s research) are quite interesting….
Nearly 1.5 billion (1,492,400,769) text messages (SMS) were sent per week between January and May, 2008
Year-on-year growth [for SMS] for May 2007 to May 2008 was 30 percent
More than 10 million (10,734,555) pictures and video messaging (MMS) were sent per week [again between January and May, 2008] — a year on year growth of 30 percent.
The number of MI users between May 2006 and May 2008 rose from about 13 million (13,140,000) to 16 million (16,425,000). It dipped slightly on last year (16,500,000)
So check these numbers out – both SMS and MMS are growing by 30% Y-O-Y, but they are the same percentage of very different numbers!! Whilst Mobile Internet access not really growing (at least according to these stats), the net effect of the newest batch of smartphones could radically alter this data in the next few months/years.
Ben is a 10+ year veteran of the Mobile industry – starting his career
when SMS was a still a relatively new concept for most people (!), he has
now consulted on everything from bleeding-edge Mobile content, to the
next-gen accessories you might view it on. As a result he has a broad and deep knowledge in numerous areas of Mobile – from network operators to device vendors, to infrastructure and middleware vendors (not to mention content delivery) – and has worked for companies in all of these areas!
He is based in the UK, a hotbed of activity for mobile, and recently
became a father for the second time – as oppose to in his younger years
when he was happy spend time tweaking all manner of mobile devices to
'nth' degree, he now looks for services and hardware that provide the most efficient, compact, and reliable improvements to his already manic life! It’s his opinion that Mobile solutions should be there to help to make
your life better – if a particular solution (be it service or device)
isn’t doing this, he believes you need to ask the very important question
of why you continue to use it...
His focus at IntoMobile is mainly on Mobile content, services, and
infrastructure, particularly as regards the UK market – and with the
occasional look at devices. Additionally, using his extensive experience
in the industry, he will provide commentary on the industry at large, with
regular (and hopefully thought-provoking) articles.
