Consumer Cellular has launched SpeakEasy, a standalone wireless brand built from scratch for Americans aged 75 and older. It is the first brand to spin out of the Consumer Cellular portfolio, and it comes with two dedicated devices, straightforward pricing, and customer support based entirely in the United States.
The Scottsdale, Arizona company already serves more than 4 million customers and has focused on the 50-plus market since its founding in 1995. But the launch of SpeakEasy signals a sharper focus on a specific slice of that audience: people old enough that mainstream smartphones and complex carrier plans have become a genuine source of frustration. According to AARP, three in five adults over 50 say technology is not designed with them in mind. For the 75-plus group, that problem gets worse with age.
“SpeakEasy is our answer,” said Ed Evans, Chairman and CEO of Consumer Cellular. “It’s not a modified mainstream product. It’s a wireless experience built from the ground up for the way people over 75 actually live, communicate, and stay connected with family and friends.”
The timing makes sense. The U.S. population is aging fast, and the 75-plus segment is one of the fastest-growing age groups in the country. Most wireless carriers have spent years chasing younger customers with flashy 5G plans and increasingly complex devices. That leaves a real gap at the other end of the market, and Consumer Cellular is betting SpeakEasy can fill it.
SpeakEasy launches with two devices:
- SpeakEasy Flip ($79.95): A durable flip phone with large buttons, front-facing volume controls, and an extra-loud speaker. It runs a proprietary interface built on an open-source Android base. Plans start at $14.95 per month and include 500MB of data.
- SpeakEasy Smart ($99.95): A full smartphone with a large screen and a simplified Android interface designed to put the most-used functions front and center: calling, texting, photos, and video. Plans start at $19.95 per month and include 3GB of data.
Both devices come with unlimited talk and text on all plans. Consumer Cellular has ranked number one in both network coverage and customer satisfaction among wireless carriers, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, and number one in customer service according to USA TODAY for 2025 and 2026.
For anyone buying before the end of 2026, there is a launch offer worth noting: two free months of service and free shipping at purchase. The credits show up on the first two bills and are worth up to $29.90 depending on the plan chosen.
SpeakEasy is available now through Consumer Cellular’s 99 retail stores across 33 states, online at SpeakEasyMobile.com, and through the company’s U.S.-based customer service team. More store locations are planned.
What makes this worth watching is not just the product itself, but the approach. Rather than adding an “easy mode” to an existing phone or slapping larger text on a standard plan, Consumer Cellular built SpeakEasy as a separate brand with its own devices, its own interface, and its own pricing structure. That kind of dedicated investment suggests the company sees the 75-plus market as a long-term growth area, not an afterthought.
