Sprint’s money-pit acquisition of Nextel a few years ago proved to be a bigger drain on Sprint’s finances than they had expected. With the iDEN-based Nextel network dragging down Sprint’s bottom line, the No. 3 US wireless carrier has recently started courting potential investors to take the Nextel network off its hands.
Alas, the Nextel network proved to be more trouble than any investor wanted to take on and Sprint has been left holding the check. Of course, Sprint’s official stance on the matter has the company “deciding” to keep Nextel within Sprint’s portfolio.
Still, Nextel fans will be glad to hear that Sprint is renewing their focus on the Nextel network and has plans to expand the network by way of more cell towers and more hardware, courtesy of Motorola. Nextel is expected to launch 8 new handsets through the end of 2009.
The question remains – will Sprint be able to pull Nextel out of the muck while simultaneously growing the Sprint network?
