Apple releases second developer betas for iOS 26.6, macOS Tahoe 26.6, and more

Apple has pushed out the second round of developer betas for its current-generation operating systems. As reported by AppleInsider, the new builds cover iOS 26.6, iPadOS 26.6, watchOS 26.6, tvOS 26.6, visionOS 26.6, macOS Tahoe 26.6, and HomePod Software 26.6. The first betas in this round dropped on May 26, making this a fairly standard two-to-three week gap between builds.

What makes this cycle a little more complicated than usual is that Apple is now running two beta tracks at the same time. After the WWDC keynote, the company kicked off developer betas for its next-generation 27-series operating systems, including iOS 27 and macOS 27. That means developers and enthusiasts now have to keep track of two separate release lines moving forward.

This kind of parallel beta schedule is not entirely new for Apple, but it does add some management overhead for developers who want to stay current on both tracks. The general rule holds: the next-gen betas get the exciting feature work, while the current-gen updates tend to focus on stability, performance, and security. Apple will keep updating the 26-series through the fall, right up until the 27 generation ships to the public.

Here are the build numbers for the second developer betas now available:

  • iOS 26.6 build 2: 23G5043d (replaces 23G5028e)
  • iPadOS 26.6 build 2: 23G5043d (replaces 23G5028e)
  • watchOS 26.6 build 2: 23U5040d (replaces 23U5025e)
  • visionOS 26.6 build 2: 23O5743c (replaces 23O5728e)
  • tvOS 26.6 build 2: 23L5744d (replaces 23L5729e)
  • macOS Tahoe 26.6 build 2: 25G5043d (replaces 25G5028f)
  • HomePod Software 26.6 build 2: 23L5744d (replaces 23L5729e)

Apple also released two additional release candidates for older macOS versions alongside the developer betas. macOS 15.7.8 RC 2 carries build number 24G809, while macOS 14.8.8 RC 2 is 23J607. Release candidates typically signal that a final public version is close.

The first iOS 26.6 beta was not entirely featureless. It added a Contacts notification that alerts users when they are approaching the maximum limit of 20,000 blocked listings, and included a security fix for Apple Maps. Whether the second beta brings anything new on that front remains to be seen as developers dig through the update.

As always, Apple and AppleInsider advise against installing beta software on any device you rely on day to day. Betas can cause data loss and unexpected issues, so a secondary device and a fresh backup are the sensible starting points. If the developer builds feel too risky, Apple typically releases a public beta version shortly after, which tends to be a bit more stable and polished than its developer counterpart.
