Nokia LogoNow S60 3rd. edition Nokia handsets will be compatible with IBM Lotus Notes, bringing some 80 million owners direct e-mail access and other communication tools. Previously Windows Mobile was the only platform to work with Lotus Notes Traveler, but Nokia’s involvement brings a lot of communication capabilities to folks who can’t afford (or don’t want) a BlackBerry. Calendar and address book functions are also synced up with the Lotus server, complementing e-mail functions nicely. Push e-mail remains RIM’s home territory, but a little competition will help keep things lively.

In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement. With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer.
