Nice. Very nice.
Nice. Very nice.

So, the first of the new items I had ordered, which arrived, was Apple’s 3G dock. Now this isn’t a new item, but, it’s one of those items that at £19, you might well have considered, and thought twice about.

However, I’m relieved to say it’s really rather good. One of the concerns I always have with dock is how they hold the device, both from the perspective of the case, and also the connector – too much weight on the connector and you eventually get accessories that don’t fit properly. Too much pressure on the case, and you get the infamous case creak!

The dock is a weighty little blighter – surprisingly so in fact, for the size that it is. Subjectively, I’d say approx the same size as a matchbox, but getting on for the same weight as might expect to find for a piece of metal – bizarre, but true.

There isn’t much in terms of technicalities with the connectors – on the back it’s just the 30-pin connector, and a line out connector. My setup is using the dock with a PC for now, so the cable from the dock goes to a computer, and data sync works great. However, I am soon to be using the doc as a charging bay, with an Apple USB cable-to-mains adapter – on the basis that most time the iPhone spends connected to it’s 30-pin connector is when it’s charging, not syncing.

There isn’t really too much more to say – it does what it says on the tin, the packaging as usual is absolutely superb, and … oh yes … the price. Well, the price is a bit steep. I think £19 is rather harsh in any terms, but I almost (note almost!) don’t begrudge paying it. I’m getting used to Apple’s superior engineering, and like it!

You can get the Apple dock for iPhone 3G (in the UK) from Apple’s site here.
