Nokia E71x for AT&T will run S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2?

By now we’re quite confident AT&T will add the Nokia’s popular E71 smartphone to its portfolio. However, we were surprised to see the screenshots above, nonetheless. They were taken by HowardForums member “bimmerd00d,” who purchased the E71x from Craigslist.

Apparently, just like some other Nokia models like the N78 and N96, AT&T’s version of the E71 will run the Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, rather than Feature Pack 1 that is found in existing E71 models around the world.

Among the improvements of the Feature Pack 2 are redesigned Active Standby, screen transitions that make the interface look nicer, new Device Manager, as well as support for Destinations, which is somewhat of an access point prioritization feature.

Nothing is confirmed at this stage by neither Nokia nor AT&T. We can only hope this is true for one good reason – if AT&T users can get the Feature Pack 2 powered E71, we hope Nokia will release the FP2 update for existing E71 owners, who still have to cope with the Feature Pack 1. This is not to say anything’s wrong with the “standard” E71 – it’s just to say that we would love to get our hands on the even better Nokia E71, all in its Feature Pack 2 glory. ;)

Would this be a first? Has any other Nokia model been released with different feature packs?

I think an E71 with FP2 would be awesome, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. Here’s why : Feature Pack 2 devices have a middle Softkey button listed on the screen. In these screenshots, the Bluetooth icon is there, suggesting a FP1 device to me. The additional info on the screen is from Mail for Exchange.

My N95-3 screen with Mail for Exchange looks just like this, and it’s FP1.

    Let’s wait and see.

I have a e71 and and e71x. I would like to downgrade my s60 3rd edtion SP 2 to SP1. I know many peopel would frown at this but I really like to SP1 much better. It is much better for business. This new SP2 is more for some persons that will not need to for business purpose. If anyone can help me please email me at clane@drew-scientific.com
