Rumour has it Apple will open up the iPhone App Store to games costing around $19.99, but only for big name publishers, like GameLoft and EA. Such a price point would end up competing with Nintendo DS and lower-end PSP titles. That’s quite an ambitious move, one that would require developers to really throw their weight behind iPhone games, but could outshine a lot of the indie games that are getting solid publicity in the current market.
Still, there’s a big gap in quality between mobile phone gaming and portable systems that will deter the hardcore gamers that the big publishers tend to target – that is, unless, they shift gears for a more casual market. It’s all in the realm of rumour for now, but we’ll keep our ears open for further clues.
