Vivo is preparing to launch the world’s first foldable phone powered by a special edition MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset. The Chinese smartphone maker revealed the custom processor will power the upcoming X Fold6, expected to launch later this month.
The announcement signals a significant push by both Vivo and MediaTek to compete in the premium foldable market, which has been largely dominated by Samsung and Qualcomm partnerships. Custom chipsets for specific device categories remain rare in the Android ecosystem, making this collaboration particularly notable.
According to Vivo, the Dimensity 9500 Super Edition took over two years to develop and was specifically engineered for foldable devices. The company claims the custom processor delivers several key improvements over standard mobile chips:
- 111% increase in peak AI computing performance compared to previous-generation NPU
- 56% reduction in power consumption
- 7% faster offline voice transcription and speech recognition
- 57% improvement in text generation speeds
- 20% boost in AI reasoning capabilities
These performance claims suggest Vivo is betting heavily on AI features to differentiate the X Fold6 from competitors. The focus on AI processing power aligns with broader industry trends, as smartphone makers increasingly rely on artificial intelligence to justify premium pricing and attract users.
The custom chipset also promises smoother multitasking and faster multi-window rendering – crucial features for foldable phones where users frequently run multiple apps simultaneously across different screen configurations. Power efficiency improvements could also help address one of the biggest challenges facing foldable devices: battery life under demanding usage scenarios.
Beyond the processor, rumors suggest the X Fold6 will include a 6,900mAh battery and an 8-inch inner display. The device will run OriginOS 6 Fold, Vivo’s custom Android skin optimized for foldable screens with productivity-focused features.
The launch comes as the foldable phone market continues to expand, with more manufacturers entering the space and prices gradually becoming more accessible. Custom silicon partnerships like this one could become more common as brands seek to differentiate their foldable offerings in an increasingly crowded market.
